Tour Details

Near the Amerindian village Galibi, the Marowijne river flows from the Atlantic Ocean. At approx. one hour by boat from the village lies the unique nature reserve named: Babunsanti. On the sand beaches of Babunsanti and Eilanti thousands of sea turtles come each year to lay their eggs (season February – August). At night it is possible to observe these unique nature phenomena: an experience you will not easily forget.

Origin and general information
Galibi is the collective name for two Amerindian villages Christiaankondre and Langamankondre. In the slavery period, the first indigenous people settled in this area. With 750 inhabitants, Galibi has in the meantime developed into a rather large community.

On the way, the guide gives information about the history of the area and interesting places along the route. During the stop at Stolkertsijver you enjoy a bread roll and a drink. In Albina a dug-out canoe is ready to continue the trip through the large estuary of the Marowijne river to Christiaankondre.

Depending on the tide the boat trip takes 1½ to 2 hours. After arrival, lunch is served and you can relax or stroll around on the beach. In the afternoon you go for a walk in the village with the opportunity to purchase souvenirs. After dinner, the boat takes you back to Babusanti. There you can see how the enormous sea turtles dig a hole in the beach to lay their eggs.
