We depart from Paramaribo to Albina at 07.30 am. This will be a trip for about 3 hours. When we reach Albina we leave by boat to French Guyana, St. Laurent du Maroni. The prison of St. Laurent du Maroni was the main penal establishment of French Guiana for a century. Some of the buildings were restored in the early 1980s. This prison got famous when they made a movie about Papillion. From 1852 the first prisoners in France were shipped to French Guiana to serve their sentence in the local jail including Papillion. This prison was used until 1946 and is now used as a museum, where daily guided
tours are available from 11.00 to 12.00 hours. During this tour you will learn more about the history & sights.
After the conducted tour in the museum. We will take a walk past some shops & markets where different ethnic groups sell their products. After this short walk we will enjoy a delicious French lunch. After lunch there is still time for lovers of architecture to explore the old buildings. Saint Laurent is also called “Le Petit Paris” because of the colonial architectural style. We will walk to old St. Laurent.
