Tour Details

The Peperpot bike tour takes you along the polders in the district Commewijne. You will cycle through former plantations where you can experience the 18th and 19th century in a relaxed atmosphere. With the protection from the fort “New Amsterdam”, Commewijne was one of the most productive agricultural districts in Suriname. During the bike tour, you will encounter former plantation buildings of which some are still inhabited. The canals and the picturesque lock systems are all silent witnesses to the dynamic history of the district Commewijne. The plantation Peperpot is located in the coastal district Commewijne, on the right bank of the Suriname River, and is bisected by the “Oos-Westverbinding”. At the plantation are the old coffee and cocoa factory, the (occupied) sub-director’s house and the old office. Also in the yard are, under renovation, the old coffee warehouse and director’s house. The existing pond, where back then through navigation channels coffee was delivered, now serves as a water reservoir for the yard. A few dozen meters away, lies the still populated kampong (village) which we will also visit.

The 3.2 km nature trail runs along one of the navigation canals of the Mopentibo plantation and is a walking and cycling trail. It is situated west, next to the Peperpot plantation. The area east of this navigation canal is likewise bordered by a wide navigation canal running parallel to it. Several by-paths allow access to the area in between both navigation canals. Moreover, in a small section of this area (A13), small bridges over the irrigation canals provide easy access and a good impression of the former outlay of the plantation. Except for a very short stretch, the navigation canal is covered by ‘mokomoko’ (Montrichardia arborescens), providing breeding-grounds for many birds. For ease of spotting and recognition of trees and plants, their nameplates have been put up throughout the area. Benches for resting are placed at various locations along the trails
Not all roads are paved. There are also other bike tours available in Commewijne.
